Managing VDC Server Disks (Storage)  Print this Article

NOTE: The server management system places all requests in a queue which uses a first-in-first-out model and may relay commands and requests over long distances. Some operations may take up to several minutes before they are completed and the results are updated in the management interface. Please be patient and do not submit duplicate commands as this will only result in problems.

  1. Navigate to the management area of your VDC and click on the Manage button for the desired machine (see this guide);
  2. On the screen which displays the Virtual Server Details for the machine, locate the Additional Tools button group and click Disk Management;
  3. The Disk Management screen displays a list of the existing storage volumes for the machine. Disk volumes can be edited and deleted, and new volumes can be created;
  4. Edit Disk - click the pencil icon for a disk volume to edit it. In the dialog box that opens, you can change the disk size (in GB) and edit the visible label for the disk. Click Save Changes to apply the new settings, or Close to quit without saving;
  5. Delete Disk - click the red 'X' for a disk volume to remove it from the machine. You will be presented with a dialog box to confirm this action. Note that removing the primary disk volume will render the machine unbootable!
  6. Create New Disk - click Create Disk if you want to add a new storage volume to the machine. A new screen will load in which you will set the desired options for the new volume:
    1. Label - specify the desired disk label.
    2. Size - move the slider to the right to specify the desired disk size.
    3. Swap Space - tick the box if this disk is swap space.
    4. Require Format Disk - tick the box if this disk requires formatting.
    5. Add to Linux FSTAB - tick the box if the disk should be added to Linux FSTAB (for Linux virtual servers).
    6. Mount Point - specify the mount point for the new disk (for Linux virtual servers). The maximum length of a Mount Point is 256 characters. Spaces are not allowed. No more than one slash is allowed. If the mount point is not specified the default mount point will be used:
    7. FreeBSD FSTAB - Tick the Add to FreeBSD FSTAB checkbox if the disk should be added to FreeBSD FSTAB (for FreeBSD virtual servers).
    8. File System - Indicate the file system (ext3 or ext4) for Linux virtual servers.
    9. Click the Add Disk button to finish. You will be returned to the previous screen with a message to indicate that the new disk has been added. NOTE: depending upon size, the new disk will take some time to build, and a reboot of the machine will be initiated.
